Original story follows.
OWENSBORO, KY—(Friday, September 16, 2016)—Kentucky State Police Post 16-Henderson was notified by Owensboro Police Department around 11:30p.m. of a police action shooting involving two Owensboro Police officers. Kentucky State Police troopers and detectives arrived to investigate the shooting in the 600 block of Delray Street in Owensboro.
The preliminary investigation reveals Owensboro Police Officers were notified of an active physical domestic involving a male and a female in the 600 block of Delray Street in Owensboro. When OPD officers arrived, they witnessed the male grab the female by her hair and put a knife to her throat during the argument. OPD officers then intervened and confronted the agitated and aggressive male in attempts to deescalate the obvious intense nature of the situation.
The OPD officers continued to negotiate with the male by providing numerous requests to drop his knife and let the female go. The male threw the female to the side and immediately charged the two OPD officers with the knife in an effort to harm the officers. The two officers then felt their lives were in imminent danger of being stabbed and both officers fired multiple times with their department issued pistols; striking the male.
Immediately after the scene was naturalized, officers checked his vitals and began conducting life-saving measures to no avail. The male perpetrator was pronounced deceased on scene by Daviess County Coroner Jeff Jones.
The female victim was immediately taken to Owensboro Health via ambulance suffering multiple knife lacerations on and around her head and neck. She also sustained injury to her knee from being forcefully thrown to the ground. The female victim was admitted and at last check, still in the hospital in stable condition.
The deceased male is currently in Louisville at the Medical Examiner’s Office awaiting autopsy.
The OPD officers involved were not hurt and has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is normal protocol for most police agencies when officers are involved in the use of force (police related shootings).
