Deputies arrived to find that 38-year-old Ryan Claus of Cuba MO was operating a 2004 Ford Pickup truck East bound on KY HWY 286. It was found that Claus had fallen asleep at the wheel and ran off the right side of the roadway. Claus struck a utility pole head on and then flipped over with his vehicle coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. Claus exited the vehicle under his own power and moved to the side of the roadway.

Shortly after Claus exited the roadway, Ronnie Giles III of Barlow KY was operating a 2009 Chevrolet passenger car West bound on KY HWY 286. Giles III topped a hillcrest just to the East of Claus’s vehicle. Giles III could not avoid striking the vehicle and made contact on the driver side. Giles was not injured as a result of this collision.

Claus was transported to a local hospital for apparent non-incapacitating injuries.

It was discovered that Claus was operating his motor vehicle on a suspended license resulting from a previous DUI conviction. Claus was later charged with Operating on a DUI Suspended license.

The roadway was shut down for approximately 1.5 hours to facilitate the cleanup of the roadway and removal of the wrecked vehicle.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Mercy Regional Ambulance Services, the Ballard County Sheriff’s Department, the Ballard County Fire Department, and the West McCracken Fire Department.
