On May 10, 2021, at approximately 1:41 p.m., the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 1 mile marker of Highway 903 in reference to a single vehicle rollover accident with injuries and possible entrapment.
Upon arriving at the scene, speaking with witnesses and further investigation, Chief Deputy Chris Noel and Deputy Jason Kirk determined Jose Daniel Mijes, 19, of Princeton was south bound on Kentucky 903 when he advised he swerved to miss an oncoming north bound vehicle close to the center line. Mr. Mijes’ vehicle dropped off the right shoulder of the road and overcorrected causing the vehicle to cross the north bound lane of travel and reenter into the south bound lane of travel striking the face of the bridge near the south bound shoulder. The vehicle came to final rest in the north bound lane on the driver’s side.
A passenger in the vehicle, Daniel Trujillo, 19, of Chicago, IL, was trapped between the driver’s side door and the roadway when first responders arrived on scene. Mr. Trujillo was freed by mechanical means by the Princeton Fire Department and airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana for treatment. Mr. Mijes was transported to Caldwell County Medical Center for treatment of non life threatening injuries.
The vehicle was removed from the scene by Stinnett’s Towing. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Caldwell County Fire Department, Caldwell County EMS, Air EVAC and Stinnett’s Towing.
